Mary is an art historian and content creator making engaging, challenging, and comedic videos for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube about visual culture history.

As audiences move away from traditional TV viewing, it’s vital that history and media communicators transition with them. New platforms such as TikTok are a unique opportunity to educate and entertain millions of young people in a more immediate format than ever before.

Growing up watching BBC history documentaries, Mary McGillivray dreamed of becoming the next Mary Beard or John Berger. Combining her professional skills in video editing with her academic research skills, she is building a platform for communicating visual literacy and critical media theory to the next generation of engaged video consumers.

Mary has worked with art galleries and cultural institutions across Australia and Europe to bring collections to a massive online audience of highly engaged young viewers.

In 2022 Mary received her MPhil in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Cambridge, and she is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Melbourne.
